Why Choose a Tight-fitting Facemask Over a Disposable Mask?

Reusable masks are proving to be an attractive option for the healthcare industry, with several hospitals and trusts having purchased stocks for pandemic planning, as they offer a benefit over traditional disposable respirators:-

Reduced Product Costs

As 3M half masks are reusable, one mask can be issued per worker per pandemic wave. 3M P3 filters are also reusable, and one pair is considered to have enough capacity to last a pandemic wave. When compared with disposable respirators which are discarded after every shift, or between patients, total product purchase costs for reusable respirators are likely to be considerably lower.

Q – For how long will a set of particulate filters last in use?

A – Whilst there is no official answer, filters are designed to filter out particles in industrial conditions until the mask begins to feel strain. Once the user has to breathe harder, it's time for a change. In a pandemic situation, it is therefore expected that one set of filters will cover at least one pandemic wave, after which they should be replaced for infection control reasons.

Q. What type of contaminants do Scott Safety respiratory masks protect against?

A. Scott Safety respiratory masks provide protection against gas, vapours, particles or a combination of both.
Q. Can I use one filter that protects me against all contaminants?
A. It is important to identify the hazard in which you wish to protect against. These hazards are divided into particles, vapours and gas and are coded as follows: A, B, E, K, AX. These are available as individual filters or a combination of several filters. The filter type will be indicated using a colour-coded label.
Q. How do I know that I am wearing the RPE correctly?
A. We would always recommend that a face-fit test to ensure their RPE facepiece is suitable. Facepiece fit testing is a method of checking that a tight-fitting facepiece matches the wearer’s facial features and seals adequately to their face. It is unlikely that one size of the mask will fit all employees in the workplace. Facial hair coming into contact with the face seal area of a face mask can seriously affect the fit of the mask. A similar effect can be caused by deep cuts or scars, heavy wrinkles, moles, glasses, goggles, hearing protectors with headbands, neck bands of a helmet or a head protector or fashion jewellery worn on the face. Remember, people come in different shapes and sizes, so facial differences will mean that one kind of RPE is unlikely to fit all. The differences are even more significant between men, women, and people of different ethnicity. If the RPE does not fit, it will not protect the wearer.
Q. Are all face masks the same size?
A. Scott Safety supplies the AVIVA half face mask in three sizes - small, medium and large. The AVIVA has a reflex double seal which absorbs facial movements, maintains the facial seal and thus offers maximum protection and comfort.
Q. Will I be able to talk whilst wearing a face mask?
A. The Scott Safety AVIVA half face mask features an enhanced integrated voice panel which benefits the wearer in that they can be heard by colleagues whilst wearing the mask.
Q. Will my goggles fit comfortably whilst wearing RPE?
A. The AVIVA has a goggle pinch feature which allows comfortable integration with eyewear. The mask sits comfortably by pinching the mask over the bridge of the nose and aligning below goggles, eyewear or safety glasses.
Q.  Will my goggles mist up whilst wearing a facepiece?
A. The AVIVA has a downward facing valve which prevents misting to eyewear when the wearer exhales.
Q: If I have the right gas filters, and my mask fits, will it always protect me against that hazard?
A: Gas masks reduce exposure to the hazard, but if the exposure goes beyond what the filter is designed to handle, or because the exposure lasts longer than what the filter is designed to handle, the filter may not be effective in providing the required protection. Also, there may be a small amount of leakage even after the event of a fit-test. A small leakage can be dangerous, particularly If there is a large amount of a toxic chemical in the outside air.
Q. Can I use my RPE more than once?
A. The Scott Safety AVIVA is a reusable face mask. Filter cartridges can have a limited life. If the filter cartridges that attach to the mask are outdated, have been open to the air or are damaged, you will not be protected. Cartridges that contain charcoal or other chemicals for filtering the air should be in air-tight packages. If cartridges are open or not packed in air-tight packaging, they should not be used. Even cartridges in original packaging have expiration dates that should be checked before the purchase.
Q. When should I replace my filters? A. Particulate filters get clogged up and become harder to breathe through. Once this happens it may become difficult to breathe comfortably. It’s at this point when you should consider changing the filters.Gas and vapour cartridge filters will start to let contaminant through once the filter has become dirty or physical damage has occurred. Inspection is required frequently to spot the early signs of this occurring.
Q. What is a Ready-Pak?A. For ultimate ease of storage and transportation, a plastic resealable “tub” is available for READY-PAK to ensure the AVIVA half mask is always stored and transported correctly.
Q: If I wear a gas mask correctly, am I completely safe?
A: The filter cartridges protect against only certain inhaled airborne substances. Some dangerous chemicals are absorbed through the skin. Properly selected and worn gas masks must be combined with PPE to completely prevent injury from these chemicals.
Q: Will a gas mask protect me if there is not enough oxygen in the air?
A: Gas masks do not provide oxygen. If used in an environment with low oxygen levels, such as a confined space or an area where oxygen is being depleted (welding) you are in danger of suffocation.
Q: Will a gas mask protect me if there is a fire?
A: It's important to read the manufacturer's information if your main concern is to be able to escape from a smoke-filled building. Smoke particles can rapidly clog gas mask filters, and filters with special chemicals are needed to protect against carbon monoxide and other gases that may occur in a fire. Not all gas masks and escape respirators protect against these hazards.
Q. How do I store the face mask when it’s not being used?
A. Over time your mask can get old and break down. It’s important that masks are kept in a clean, dry place, away from extreme heat or cold. Where respirators are used in the workplace, a formal maintenance plan should be implemented and reviewed at regular intervals.
Q.  Are the filters included when I buy a face mask?
A. When you buy a face mask from a1-cbiss, the mask is sold independently of the filters. You will need to order filters separately
Q.  What is the shelf life of the filters?
A. Most filters have a shelf life of around 10 years. Each pack of filters will have a shelf life printed on the packaging. Once opened, dispose of after 6 months, however, some filters may only last a few days the concentration is high.
Q.  Do I need training on how to wear RPE correctly?
A. For RPE to remain effective during use it should be integrated into operational procedures. You must ensure that RPE is properly used and not made ineffective by incorrect work practices or incorrect use. You should ensure that RPE is used in the way it is intended to be used and instructed by the manufacturer. It’s important RPE users are trained so they understand why they are required to wear RPE, which RPE to use, how to wear it correctly, when to wear it, when to change filters and other consumable parts, how to maintain the RPE in good condition, how to clean it, how to store the RPE when it’s not in use and when to replace it.
Q. Is a face fit test mandatory?
A. a1-cbiss will always recommend a face fit test but we cannot force customers into it. Liability rests with the customer.
Q. How much does a face fit cost?
A. Our supplier Scott Safety charge £500 which is the cost for a full day of face fit testing. This is suitable for large companies that require a number of people face fit testing. For half masks, customers can be trained to do their own face fit testing.

Face fit test: a1-cbiss always recommends that a face fit test is carried out prior to purchase to ensure that the right size is bought.

Please ensure you have been fit tested and know which size respirator to purchase from us - this is your own responsibility! So that the seal on the half-mask respirator fits around your face, you need to be cleanly shaven.
