Respiratory Masks & Escape Hoods Explained

A respirator is a safety device to protect you from inhaling dangerous substances such as dust or particulates, and gas and vapours, some types of bacteria, or any combination of these airborne substances. Safety mask respirators come in a wide range of types and sizes ideal for anyone who is coming into contact with these hazardous substances. Safety mask respirators range from cheap single-use, disposable masks to reusable devices with replaceable cartridges and filters.

Workers should use respirators to protect their health and aid control of occupational diseases caused by airborne hazards. Respiratory protection provides workers with clean uncontaminated air to safely breathe in.

Respiratory Air Fed Masks - filter gases and particulates out of the air as you breathe. When the user inhales, air is pulled through the filter. This respirator includes a facepiece mask and a filter. Straps secure the facepiece to the head. We recommend the half mask for up to an hour for up to 1-hour use. For longer than 1 hour, we recommend a full face mask.

Escape Hoods - (breathing escape sets) are designed to be used only in an emergency, and only to escape from a dangerous area to a safe area. There are several escape respirators on the market. Many of them use a hood with a neck seal instead of a facepiece. They are typically designed for single use for up to 15 minutes.

Powered Air Respirators - Powered and/or Supplied Air respirators are powered by battery packs and feed a mask, visor or hood with clean and pure air. We recommend the use of a powered air respirator when a respirator is required for a full shift.

Respiratory Visors & Hoods - These are popular because they are loose fitting and they don't require the wearer to have a fit test. They offer increased comfort for longer duration wear due to the cooling effect of air circulation.
