Occupational Welding Fume Update

Following the occupational exposure changes for welding fumes, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) is strengthening its enforcement action and compliance.

A key point to note now is that regardless of duration, the HSE will no longer accept any welding undertaken without any suitable exposure control measures in place, as there is no known safe level of exposure.

Health Concerns

Welding fume is now internationally classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. You need to be aware that personal exposure to all welding fumes, including mild steel welding fume, can cause lung cancer and potentially kidney cancer.

This means that if you carry out any type of welding activity as part of your work, you need to understand the risks. It’s important that you know the risks, plan your work and use the right controls when welding.

Who Suffers as a Result of Exposure?

Although welders themselves are the people whose health is threatened by welding fume, employers too may suffer if they fail to take the appropriate steps to protect their workers.

Employers shown to be negligent can be – and have been – made to pay in court.

By issuing your workers with the right personal protective equipment, you'll be able to demonstrate that you are properly protecting your workers’ health and satisfying the visiting HSE inspector.

Respiratory Protective Equipment

The filter and fan are mounted on the waist belt of this battery-powered welding kit. It delivers filtered air to the welder from the flexible hose at the back of the unit.

The filtered air can help to keep the welder cool and would be more comfortable to wear for longer periods of time.
This RPE is recommended for all types of arc welding in a well-ventilated area.

Powered Air Respirators are worn to protect the workers from respirable welding dust.

A face fit test is not required for powered air respirators with loose-fitting head tops, like the Z4; the head top doubles as a welding visor.

The Z4 Welding Respirator benefits from;

- Flip-Up Visor - The Z4 ® comprises of a crystal-clear grinding visor and a flip-up welding visor which you can lift to check welds and instantly begin grinding.

- Optional Clip-in Shade 5 Side Windows - Offer a maximum peripheral vision. These can be switched out for window blockers which are also included in the standard package.

- Superior Optical Quality - The Z4 ® is fitted with our large ADF lens boasting an optical quality rating of 1.1.1.1 with the all-important fourth “1”.

- Configurable Lens - Advanced angular dependence control guarantees uniform shading and distortion-free vision, allowing operators to work comfortably across different angles as required.

- Adjustable Air Flow - The dual air distribution system delivers 75% to your breathing zone via a multi-directional outlet. The remaining 25% is directed over the grinding visor to prevent fogging
