Peracetic Acid (also known as PAA or Peroxyacetic Acid) is an extremely useful chemical. It is used in a variety of industries, ranging from healthcare to aseptic packaging and other foods. Additionally, it is environmentally safe, as it breaks down into acetic acid (vinegar) and water. This feature is thanks to its highly reactive properties, which also makes it a great biocide/sterilant.

Beyond its benefits, its high reactivity is also what makes it potentially dangerous. Overexposure to PAA can cause some serious health issues, including pulmonary edema, permanent lung damage, skin burns, and more.

NHS England have issued guidance for hospital estates and facilities teams to evaluate risk of oxygen enrichment. Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, makeshift hospitals have miles of pipeline with oyxgen feeding a high number of ventilators. Should a leak occur, this would enrich the air with oxygen and increase combustion risk.

BCGA Guidance Note 11, 5.3.4 states that oxygen is not flammable, but large amounts of it in the air enables fire to spread faster. Therefore trusts have also been ordered to carry out regular monitoring of “potentially exposed rooms” to ensure oxygen enrichment is controlled.
