Changes to EH40 Workplace Exposure Limits

In 2018, we saw changes to the Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) and Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs). These are listed within the EH40/2005 Workplace Exposure Limits Regulations.

Whilst it’s the job of your health and safety personnel to constantly monitor the potential exposure risks to hazardous gases, are they aware of the impact of the changes to the EH40?

Your business needs to have the most suitable equipment to monitor the atmosphere for gas hazards.

Gas Detection Regulations

It’s somewhat of a grey area for what is needed to ensure adequate gas detection within the workplace. There can be uncertainty as to where fixed gas detection equipment should be positioned, whether a mix of fixed and portable equipment is required and how this equipment should be monitored and maintained. Where there is uncertainty, there is room for error and this can lead to incidents with devastating consequences.

How Do You Know if You’re Sufficiently Protected?

Your workforce may wear portable gas detectors that constantly monitor their breathing zone. Pre-entry testing may be carried out for entry into confined spaces and a fixed gas detection system may protect your facility. When working in an area where it’s not safe to breathe, workers can pop on a respirator. But is that enough?

If you are unaware of the EH40 changes, you won’t be aware of what’s now regarded as a safe exposure to gas hazards. So you may not necessarily know if you are sufficiently protected.

Although many Health and Safety professionals constantly monitor risk in the workplace, specialists in gas detection may well be able to provide a more leak-tight gas detection programme when it comes to determining exposure to workplace gas hazards.
